Smart Space Solutions for Small(er) Homes

Living in a small home doesn’t mean you have to live with small dreams for your space. With a few smart space solutions, even the tiniest apartment or condo can feel functional, cozy, and maybe pretty awesome. And think about it this way: less space means less to clean! 🙂

Here are three small-space strategies I love for homes with limited square footage:

1. Look up: use your vertical space

When floor space is tight, your walls become prime real estate. If you follow me on social media, you know I always talk about “going up!” Like, over and over and over. Add wall-mounted shelves above desks, sofas, or doors. Use tall bookcases instead of short ones. Consider hooks, pegboards, or over-the-door organizers for bags, coats, and accessories. Use stacking drawers under sinks.

Storing “up” instead of “out” keeps surfaces clear and makes your home feel more open and calm.

2. Choose multipurpose furniture

In a small home, every piece should be functional. Think:

  • A trunk as a coffee table that hides blankets, games, or off-season clothes
  • An ottoman with hidden storage
  • A bed with drawers underneath
  • A slim console table that doubles as a desk

When furniture does double (or triple) duty, you naturally reduce clutter and make organizing easier to maintain.

3. Create clear zones, even in one room

One of the biggest game-changers for small homes is zoning. Give every activity its own “mini area,” even if it’s just a corner: a reading nook with a chair and lamp, a work zone at the table, a drop zone by the door with hooks and a basket. And, if helpful, use furniture to divide the space; for example, the IKEA KALLAX unit—one of my favorite items—is a great piece for separating zones.

When your space has zones, you know where things belong. That means less wandering clutter and fewer “Where did [insert item] go?” moments.

You don’t need more square footage to feel more organized; you just need a smarter space solutions. Start with one wall, one piece of furniture, or one zone, and watch your small space start working big-time for you.
